All set for the 'Reid Bowl': The Chiefs coach's most special game
It is safe to say that Reid is one of the best head coaches to walk the NFL in the last 25 years. Since he took the Philadelphia Eagles' bench in 1999, he has only finished two seasons with a negative record (6-10 in 2005 and 4-12 in 2012), has reached the Super Bowl four times (2005, 2020, 2021 and 2023) and he has won it once (2020).
While it is true that their record in the Vince Lombardi Trophy game is negative (1-2, pending what happens against the Eagles), it is worth noting that in their two defeats, they have come up against the now-retired Tom Brady.
In 2005, during the 39th edition, victory escaped him against the New England Patriots, at the helm of the Eagles, by just three points (21-24).
In 2021, the 'GOAT' took away the possibility of lifting a double championship by eliminating the Chiefs in his first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, thanks to a comfortable score of 31-9 in favour of the Florida franchise.
But Reid's 10-year run at the helm of the Chiefs is on track to be a memorable one. He has yet to finish a regular season in negative numbers and since 2016 he has dominated the AFC West with an iron fist, finishing first in the division every year since then.
The idyll with Patrick Mahomes
In his 24 seasons as a head coach in the NFL, Reid has had the opportunity to coach some very good players. Stars, some of them.
But none has shone as brightly as Patrick Mahomes under the Californian coach. They have become the Bill Belichick and Brady of the modern era.
Since the Texan quarterback began starting for the Chiefs five seasons ago, they have always reached at least the American Conference Finals.
In fact, in the play-offs, they have suffered defeat in that span against the Patriots (2019), the Buccaneers (2021) and the Cincinnati Bengals (2022), with whom they gained revenge in the semi-finals of the current postseason.
Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, will be Kansas City's third chance in the last four years to be champions. It will also be the most special for Reid, who will be facing the Philadelphia Eagles where he was happy but couldn't win a ring.
He will also have to overcome the status of favourites carried by his former franchise, and everything is set for the 'Reid Bowl'!
