Alvarez v Golovkin preview: Highly-anticipated clash awaits Las Vegas
The latter will be looking to finally gain the upper-hand on Canelo (57-2-2) having been edged out against the Mexican in the middleweight rivals’ two previous bouts.
They both boxed a thrilling but controversial split draw in their first meeting in 2017, with many observers believing Golovkin (42-1-1) should have come away with victory.
A rematch was scheduled a few months later in May but had to be postponed as a result of Canelo testing positive for banned substance clenbuterol, landing him a six-month suspension in the process.
Released from his ban and one year on from the first bout, Canelo earned bragging rights over Golovkin in the second instalment via a majority decision.
But although the result on this occasion proved to be a little less contentious, plenty still argued the Kazakh could have also won that bout.
With the trilogy poised to settle the score once and for all with Canelo looking to defend his WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF titles, here is what you need to know about the super middleweight event.
When is Canelo vs. Golovkin III?
The third instalment of Canelo vs. Golovkin will take place on Saturday, September 17th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
The main card is set to begin at 1am on Sunday, September 18th, with ring walks for the showpiece scheduled later for 4am.
Where can the fight be viewed?
The event is being shown exclusively on streaming platform DAZN in the UK and Ireland via a pay-per-view service.
What are both fighters' form?
Since their last fight, both Canelo and Golovkin have featured regularly in the win column but have embarked on slightly different paths.
The more active Canelo put together a seven-fight win streak, picking up titles at super middleweight and light heavyweight classes.
Golovkin has also fared well despite his lack of activity, boasting a 4-0 record and notching two titles since suffering defeat in 2018, albeit against slightly lesser competition than what Canelo faced.
However, Canelo has not been perfect across that stretch. He enters the contest looking to shake off May’s decision defeat at the hands of Russian light heavyweight champion Dimitry Bivol, which served as just the second loss in his professional career.
Golovkin's most recent bout will see him join Saturday's main event riding on a wave of confidence after taking out Ryota Murata in nine rounds to stop him unifying the IBF and WBA middleweight titles.
