With opportunities drying up, hopes of a successful Welsh comeback appeared to be fading, until their inspirational captain stepped up once more.
With the USA caught sleeping from a quickly taken throw-in, Bale nipped ahead of Tim Ream and was forcefully challenged by the defender inside the area. There was little doubting the awarding of the penalty, or indeed the man to take it, as Bale stepped up and dispatched his country’s first goal at the World Cup since 1958.
