Teenage sensation Beau Greaves has been defeated in her PDC World Championship debut, losing to Ireland's Willie O'Connor.

The 18-year-old made history by becoming the youngest woman to ever compete in the 30-year history of the championships but fell short of victory after succumbing to a 3-0 defeat at Alexandra Palace.

'Beau 'n' Arrow' started strongly, throwing a confident 120 check-out to open proceedings, but was soon pegged back by O'Connor.

'The Magpie' - a semi-finalist in this year's UK Open - kept his nerve and his experience eventually showed, pulling the tie back by winning the next two legs, finally taking the first set with a double five after Greaves had missed on double 16.

A topsy-turvy battle in the second was taken to a decider by Greaves, with the Irishman taking it after hitting a calm double eight.

A one-sided final set saw the curtains drawn early on eight-time PDC Women's Series winner Greaves, who left the stage showing visible signs of disappointment.

Elsewhere, two-time runner-up Michael Smith booked his place in the third round of the tournament after beating Northern Ireland's Nathan Rafferty 3-0, while Florian Hempel defeated Keegan Brown 3-2 and Lourence Ilagan toppled Rowby-John Rodriguez 3-2.
