Former football goalkeeper Petr Cech (40) has moved from the Guildford Phoenix to the Chelmsford Chieftains of the English Hockey League. The Champions League winner helped the team to a 6-4 win at Oxford City and was the star of the match on his debut for the third-division team on Sunday. Cech admitted he was a bit nervous before the game.

"I really enjoyed my debut because I hadn't played a game for Guildford since the play-offs last season, so I was really excited. But I have to admit that I was a bit nervous before the game because I really wanted to be useful to the team and help them to win," said Cech in an interview with Sport Invest, the agency that represents him.

"It's a higher competition and of course the quality matches that. The game was played at a higher tempo. There were a lot of scoring opportunities and shots on both sides."

After his success with Guildford, he wanted to move up a level. "At Guildford we won the league, the play-offs and the cup competition. We completed a hat-trick of wins. Now the opportunity to play in a higher competition has come up so I wondered if I would take up the challenge. In the end, I evaluated everything and I thought it was an attractive opportunity and a great experience," said Cech.

"They have a new coach at Chelmsford. He has teamed up with the coach at Guildford because they know each other. They were discussing whether I could help the 'Chiefs'. I've been on the ice with the team a few times, so we've got to know each other a little bit," said the former goalkeeper for Blaszany, Sparta, Rennes, Chelsea and Arsenal.

His personal goals are set. "I would like to build on my performances from the previous two years in a Guildford jersey. I hope to be useful to the team and help them to succeed in the competition," he noted.

He will commute to Chelmsford twice a week for training. "Now we only played one game during the weekend, but most of the games are played on Saturday and Sunday, so it will depend on the coach's decision how he needs me," said Cech.

He thinks he's improving. "I feel like I'm getting better on the ice. That's why I took the move to a higher competition as a natural progression," noted the former Czech international, who quit his job as a sports and technical advisor at Chelsea in June after the new owner arrived.
