Matic to Mata: Who makes the past players seven-a-side squad?

Veron didn't quite live up to the standards he'd set previously in his career

Chelsea host Manchester United on Saturday as two of England's top clubs go head-to-head. Both teams have had some incredible players over the years, but who are the best that have played for both?

Flashscore takes a look at the best players to turn out for both Chelsea and United in a fantasy seven-a-side team:

GK - Mark Bosnich (50)

Bosnich features in goal, making a combined total of 28 Premier League appearances for both clubs. The Australian actually started at Manchester United but left for Sydney United in 1991 before returning to the Red Devils in 1999 and kept 11 clean sheets in 23 matches.

The arrival of Fabain Barthez lead to Bosnich's departure to Chelsea, where he played just five games.

DEF - Nemanja Matic (34)

Cheating slightly by putting him in defence, but the Serbian midfielder initially signed for Chelsea in 2009. He was victim of the Vitesse Arnhem loan machine, before leaving for Benfica after just three appearances for the Blues.

Matic would be re-signed in the 2014 winter transfer window, playing a key role in Chelsea's domestic double a year later. He would win another league title before being sold to United in 2017. His appearances started to slow down as the years went on, before he left for Roma in the summer of 2022.

DEF - Juan Sebastian Veron (47)

Partnering Matic in defence is Argentine legend Veron. In 2001, he was signed by United for a then-record transfer fee of £23.4m but failed to live up to expectations in England.

When a certain Russian billionaire took over Chelsea in 2003, Veron was brought for £15m, but again didn't perform to the standards that many anticipated and he returned to his home country in 2007 with Estudiantes.

MID - Juan Mata (34)

One of the more successful members of the squad, Mata was a key perferomer in his debut season at Chelsea, scoring 12 and assisting 19 as the Blues won the FA Cup and Champions League. His form would continue the following season where he played in 62 games, before the arrival of a certain manager (more on him later) would result in the Spaniard becoming unsetted and being sold to David Moyes' United in 2014.

A mixed spell at United was brought to an end following the arrival of Erik ten Hag, with Mata released in the summer of 2022 and signing for Galatasaray in Turkey.

FWD - Mark Hughes (58)

The oldest member of our side, Hughes had two spells at United before signing for Chelsea in 1995. He would also have an illustrious career between playing for the two sides, as well as turning out for Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He ended up with 173 career goals, 113 of them coming during his time at United. Hughes also picked up Chelsea's player of the season award in 1997.

The former player is now a manager, currently plying his trade with Bradford in League Two.

FWD - Romelu Lukaku (29)

The focal point of our front three, Lukaku didn't have the best of times at either Chelsea or United. The Belgian initially signed for Chelsea in 2011 and went on loan to West Brom and Everton before leaving permanently for the Toffees in 2014.

A superb 2016/17 campaign at Everton saw him score 25 league goals, prompting United to sign him. While he did score goals in Manchester, he was not longer seen as a good fit for the team in 2019 and was sold to Inter Milan.

Lukaku would spend two years in Italy before returning to Chelsea in one of the worst transfers in football history, playing just a handful of games before admitting he never wanted to leave Italy and didn't really want to be at the London club. He has since been loaned back to Inter and would probably have his reservations over being included in this seven-a-side.

FWD - Radamel Falcao (36)

Another striker in the side who struggled in the Premier League but was fantastic in Europe. Falcao was loaned to both United and then Chelsea after signing for Monaco, but made just a handful of appearances for both clubs, scoring only five times. He would actually excel when he returned to France, scoring 83 and providing 14 in 140 games.

He now plays for Rayo Vallecano, and is the only member of our side to have been named in a FIFA World XI - being selected for his performances at Atletico Madrid in 2012.

Manager - Jose Mourinho (59)

Taking charge of the side will be the 'Special One', or the 'Calm One'. Mourinho enjoyed plenty of success at both Chelsea and United, winning the league twice with the Blues and completing a treble of sorts at the Red Devils - claiming the Community Shield, the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

The Portugese manager was also a big reason behind Mata's switch to United, although they appeared to put differences aside once the pair reunited in Manchester.

He remains the most recent United coach to win a trophy with the club, but has since managed Tottenham Hotspur and is now in charge of Roma, winning the Europa Conference League last season.
