Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Man Utd with immediate effect
The announcement comes after Ronaldo took part in a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV in the run-up to the World Cup, in which he heavily criticised United.
A statement from the club on Tuesday read: “Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.
“The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.
“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”
The announcement comes after Ronaldo hit out at United’s owners, teammates and manager Erik ten Hag, straining his relationship with the club.
The 37-year-old said he had been "betrayed" by Ten Hag and claimed the Dutchman tried to force him away from the Red Devils.
"Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early," said a statement from Ronaldo.
"I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.
"I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future."
It spells a sour end to a second stint at United for Ronaldo, who rejoined the club on a two-year deal from Juventus in the summer of 2021.
He made 346 appearances in total during his two spells, scoring 145 goals and winning a haul of trophies including three Premier League titles, the Champions League and FA Cup.
Ronaldo is currently with Portugal at the World Cup in Qatar and is set to lead them out in their opening Group H match against Ghana on Thursday.
