Smith wins in Manchester to put one foot in Premier League final night
Smith's victory has all but secured him a place in the final night of the competition in London.
In the quarter-finals, 'Bully Boy' Smith faced compatriot Nathan Aspinall. The two players are competing with Jonny Clayton for third and fourth place in the standings, and the match was crucial for both players.
Aspinall started off poorly, falling behind 3-0 before pulling two legs back, but Smith eventually won 6-3.
Later in the evening, Smith faced Michael van Gerwen in the semi-finals. Van Gerwen had finally beaten Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals and was looking to continue his good form against Smith. However, the Dutchman had no answer for Smith - hitting top form himself - and he won the match 6-4.
In the final, Smith faced Jonny Clayton. Clayton had initially led 2-1 in the match, but Smith soon went on a marauding run of five consecutive legs to win the match 6-3.
Smith came close to hitting a nine-darter in the fifth leg, agonisingly missing on double 12. He also started with six perfect darts in the sixth leg, but he missed the treble 20.
Smith's victory in Manchester has taken him to 28 points in the standings, six points clear of Clayton and Aspinall who both reside on 22.
The final night of the Premier League will be held in London on May 25, and a stride-hitting Smith will be looking to add to his tally of wins and secure a place on the podium.
