English darts player Nathan Aspinall will go for the World Matchplay title for the first time.

The two-time World Championship semi-finalist defeated compatriot Joe Cullen 17-9 in the semi-finals at Blackpool's famous Winter Gardens on Saturday night.

On Sunday, the 32-year-old will face Welshman Jonny Clayton of England in the final of the second most important tournament of the year.

Clayton only just came out on top against Luke Humphries, winning 17-15 in the other semi-final.

So there will definitely be a new winner, the big favourites had already fallen by the wayside in previous rounds.

Defending champion Michael van Gerwen already failed in the opener whilst World Champion Michael Smith, Peter Wright and Gerwyn Price all had to leave in the last 16.

The two German participants, World Championship semi-finalist Gabriel Clemens and Martin Schindler, were eliminated in the first round.

The World Matchplay, played since 1994, is beside the World Championship as the oldest and most important tournament of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC).
