Everton dumped out of League Cup by Bournemouth
It didn't take long for the Cherries to put their stamp on the game, as Jamal Lowe fired a deflected shot beyond Asmir Begovic in the seventh minute.
Everton, clearly taken aback by conceding early on, quickly got a grip on the game and began to carve out chances of their own.
The Blues continued to dictate much of the play for the remainder of the first-half, but couldn't unlock Bournemouth.
Shortly after the restart, the home side extended their lead through Junior Stanislas after a mix up among Everton's defence.
The Cherries began to grow into the game even more after going 2-0 up, but their guests continued to apply pressure high up the pitch.
Everton would make good on their chances, clawing the score-line back to 2-1 through a wonderfully worked Demarai Gray goal via an intelligent pass by Neal Maupay.
But Frank Lampard's side would feel blue again, with Emiliano Marcondes reinstating Bournemouth's two-goal lead in the 78th minute.
Another defensive error gifted the Cherries a chance to put the tie well beyond Everton and Jaidon Anthony made no mistake from close range to make it 4-1 just four minutes later.
Elsewhere in the League Cup, Leicester City progressed with a 3-0 win over Newport.
