Former Man Utd goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has moved out of intensive care.

The 57-year-old was taken to hospital while on holiday in Croatia earlier this month after suffering a bleed on the brain. He was later transferred to intensive care in the Netherlands.

"First of all, we want to thank everyone for all the great and supportive messages," said a statement from the ex-Ajax and Netherlands international on his Twitter page.

'I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit.

"However, I’m still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery!"

Van der Sar stepped down as Ajax chief executive in June after they failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009.
