Sheffield Utd cut through Corberán’s West Brom
Despite the appointment of Carlos Corberán midweek, early groans from the Hawthorns crowd signalled the home side’s negative approach at the beginning of the game. West Brom were made to rue sitting deep in the opening 15 minutes when they were undone by a George Baldock ball across the box which fell to the feet of Iliman Ndiaye, who swept home to put the Blades in front. It went from bad to worse for the hosts just over ten minutes after Ndiaye’s strike, as Oli McBurnie capped off a superb counter-attack by dispatching a side-footed effort from the edge of the box to score his seventh goal in the last ten games, and double United’s lead.
The hosts did look to express themselves in the second half, perhaps in an effort to get the home faithful back on their side after being followed down the tunnel by a chorus of boos at half-time. However, the Baggies struggled to put together any meaningful attacking moves to trouble the visitors’ rearguard, making it relatively easy for the Yorkshire outfit to sit on their two goal advantage and collect all three points.
It was yet another disappointing day out for West Brom, losing a third straight game in the Championship. To make matters worse, their measly tally of two wins from their first seventeen games sees the Black Country side sit firmly in the relegation zone, facing a potential trip down to League One for the first time since 1991.
