Cypriot Cup match postponed after pitch invasion before kick-off
Yesterday, the Cypriot Cup match between Limassol rivals Apollon and AEL was postponed shortly before kick-off because of supporters invading the pitch.
According to the local football federation, fans of both clubs entered the Limassol Stadium pitch and started throwing flares at each other, which led the referee to postpone the game.
After the intervention of riot police, the federation said conditions were still not right for the match to take place.
Apollon disputed the these claims and said in a statement the decision to abandon the match was “political”.
The club added it awaits reasons why the decision was made, since it was known the match would be a high-risk affair.
