England will face Slovakia in the last 16 of Euro 2024 on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen after they finished third in Group E, avoiding a potential clash with the Netherlands.

The fixture will take place at 17:00 BST.

England boss Gareth Southgate is under fire at home after a series of less-than-inspiring matches in the group stages. Many fans and pundits have heavily criticised the Three Lions' approach to the tournament so far.

The manager felt his side "were much improved" despite a poor 0-0 draw against Slovenia on Tuesday.

"I thought we were much improved with the ball," Southgate told ITV after the match.

"We have created some good openings, and at the moment, it is hard work for us. We are not quite getting that break in front of goal. I think the players who came on did well. I understand the reactions but it is a tough environment.

"We tried to win the game by the changes we made. We put attacking players on the pitch."

The draw means the Three Lions will avoid a potential early banana skin fixture against hosts Germany, tournament favourites France, as well Portugal and Spain, who now all find themselves on the other side of the bracket.

Finishing second would have meant a knockout tie with a swiftly improving German side.

Meanwhile, Phil Foden has temporarily left England's Euro 2024 base in Germany to return home due to a "pressing family matter," thought to be the birth of his third child, the English Football Association said on Thursday.

Foden, who won Premier League Player of the Year accolades for his starring role in Manchester City's title triumph this season, has started all three of England's games at the tournament so far.

It remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old will be available for the Three Lions' last 16 match on Sunday.

Foden is just one of a number of England stars who have failed to replicate their club form at international level at the Euros.
