22:59 BST - Some people like to overcomplicate penalties - Ivan Toney is not one of those people.

22:45 BST - For anyone brave enough to relive it, here's a look back at how England made it past Switzerland.

22:34 BST - England captain Harry Kane said it was a strange experience not being involved in the penalties at the end of the game.

22:12 BST - Jordan Pickford was full of pride for the way England navigated their penalty shootout earlier in the day.

21:55 BST - FULL-TIME: There's the final whistle. The only quarter-final of Euro 2024 that did not go to extra time. Turkey had the Dutch rattled with a 1-0 lead which they held onto for the majority of the game, but the Netherlands hit back with two quick goals to overturn the deficit and set up a showdown with England in the semi-finals. Key stats from the Netherlands' win

21:52 BST - SAVE! Bart Verbruggen has just produced an incredible save from a short-range Semih Kilicsoy shot. The Netherlands only have a couple more minutes to hold out here.

21:34 BST - GOAL! Cody Gakpo has given the Netherlands the lead!

21:28 BST - GOAL! Memphis Depay puts in a cross and Stefan de Vrij gets on the other end of it to level things at 1-1.

21:14 BST - CLOSE! Arda Guler fires a shot into the crossbar. Hearts would have been in mouths from the Dutch support.

21:04 BST - And we are back underway in Berlin. Can the Dutch turn things around and set-up a semi-final against England? Wout Weghorst has come on to replace Steven Bergwijn.

20:58 BST - Jude Bellingham described England's victory against Switzerland as their best outing at Euro 2024 so far.

"All in all it's probably our best performance of the tournament," he told the BBC. "We've very proud of the boys.

"The things you can't always measure and see is character and mentality and we showed that again in the shootout. For subs to come on and take a penalty in that pressure is a special, special thing."

20:53 BST - Back to England's victory, where Harry Kane heaped praise on Bukayo Saka, a player who put the difficulties of missing a penalty at Euro 2020 to score one today and help send England into the semi-finals.

"That's tournament football for you. You have to find a way," Kane told the BBC.

"I was weirdly calm during penalties. We have a lot more players that take them for their club. I know they are comfortable and know Pickford normally saves one.

"I think penalty shootouts are the highest pressure you will feel as a professional footballer. But for (Saka) to step up like he did after the tough time he had been through (in 2020).

"I am really proud of him and proud of everyone. There is one week left. We will see how far we can go."

20:49 BST - HALF-TIME: We have reached the break in Berlin with Turkey a goal ahead. Can they hold out here?

20:35 BST - GOAL! Arda Guler produces a beautiful lofted cross into the box, Samet Akaydin gets his head to it to nod home and give Turkey a 1-0 lead.

20:08 BST - A bit of rection to England's win on penalties coming through. Bukayo Saka told the BBC: "I am going to put it up there. Special - how we fought back and to go to penalties.

"Last time we took at penalty shootout at the Euros we know what happened. I believed. I felt like we dominated the whole game and the chance would come and I took it - I am proud of myself for that.

"I think it shows how much we want to win this tournament. Hopefully, next game we can win in 90-minutes but if this is what it takes – we will do anything!"

Bukayo Saka

On how he held his nerve today after missing a penalty in the 2020 Euros final: "I have faith in God. To come back from something like that is really difficult, today I took the chance."

20:01 BST - We are underway in Berlin. Who will take the final place in the last four?

19:53 BST - Time to find out who England will face in their semi-final! Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella replaced banned defender Merih Demiral with the returning Samet Akaydin for their quarter-final.

Demiral scored twice against Austria in the last 16 but UEFA suspended him for two matches after making a controversial salute during celebrations, associated with Turkish right-wing extremist group Grey Wolves.

Akaydin missed the previous match through suspension, along with captain Hakan Calhanoglu, who also returns to the line-up. Real Madrid teenager Arda Guler starts up front for Turkey, looking to continue his fine run of form.

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman stuck with the same team that thrashed Romania 3-0 in the last 16.

19:41 BST - England made hard work of it, as always seems to be the case, but they are into the final four where they will face either the Netherlands or Turkey. Click here to read the full report.

19:40 BST - GOAL! England are into the semi-finals! Trent Alexander-Arnold is the man to do it!

19:39 BST - GOAL! Zeki Amdouni rolls it home. However, if England score next they go through.

19:38 BST - GOAL! Ivan Toney has scored to put England on the brink!

19:37 BST - GOAL! Xherdan Shaqiri also finds the side netting. Some good-quality penalties so far.

19:36 BST - GOAL! Bukayo Saka replicates Jude Bellingham's penalty. In fact it's even better - it hits the side netting.

19:35 BST - GOAL! Fabian Schar steps up and makes it 2-1 to England after two penalties from each team.

19:35 BST - GOAL! Jude Bellingham cooly slots his in the bottom right.

19:34 BST - SAVED! Manuel Akanji is up next and his penalty is stopped by Jordan Pickford!

19:33 BST - GOAL! Cole Palmer is up first and scores!

19:29 BST - Harry Kane is off the field but he was replaced by Ivan Toney, so England are well placed for this shootout.

19:28 BST - WE ARE GOING TO PENALTIES. This isn't what England, Gareth Southgate or the England fans wanted, but that's where we're headed.

19:27 BST - England are under huge amounts of pressure here, with Jordan Pickford forced to make a save from Zeki Amdouni. They are clinging on.

19:24 BST - CLOSE! Xherdan Shaqiri has almost won it by scoring directly from a corner, but his attempt hits the crossbar just in front of the flailing Jordan Pickford. What a way to win it that would have been - but crucially England are still alive.

19:13 BST - Here we go then, then second period of extra time is underway.

19:10 BST - That is it for the first period of extra time. Can England find a goal in the final 15 minutes before penalties?

18:54 BST - We're back up and running. Each of the three quarter-finals so far at Euro 2024 have gone to extra time, so we're in familiar territory as we get back underway.

18:49 BST - FULL-TIME! Extra time beckons in Dusseldorf. Saka's effort has rescued England and they'll have another 30 minutes of action at least.

18:36 BST - GOAL! ENGLAND ARE LEVEL!

Just five minutes after falling behind, England hit back through Bukayo Saka. He finds space and bends a wicked effort into the corner. We have a game.

18:31 BST - GOAL! Switzerland take the lead and you have to say it's been coming.

Breel Embolo crashes in a low cross from close range to put the Swiss in front.

18:30 BST - Not much happening going forward for England either. They're yet to register a shot on target in this one so far and we're beyond 70 minutes.

18:25 BST - Switzerland are enjoying a prolonged spell of possession now and England are struggling to fully get out.

They're in danger of slipping back into old ways here.

18:14 BST - A bit of a ding-dong is developing between Ezri Konsa and Breel Embolo. The Aston Villa defender doesn't look afraid to engage in a physical battle with the Swiss forward.

18:01 BST - No changes from either side at the break. Switzerland get us back underway.

17:58 BST - England slightly tipped the balance of the first half, but it's definitely anyone's game from here on.

Win probability

17:46 BST - HALF-TIME: It's been a better showing from England but they've not managed to really trouble Switzerland so far.

Chances have been coming at a premium at both ends, and it's level at the break.

Match stats

17:44 BST - Nothing much is going on, to be frank, so here's this Switzerland fan's reaction to Jude Bellingham being on the receiving end of a foul.

17:20 BST - Fairly even start to this one, but no real significant openings as of yet. England are starting to put their stamp on things, though.

17:01 BST - Some very early observations - Kieran Trippier has taken up a position on the left, Bukayo Saka is on the right.

It's not what most expected before kick-off, so could we be in for a bit of switching today?

17:00 BST - Game on at the Dusseldorf Arena! Stick with us for all the key updates.

Alternatively, you can follow the game with live audio commentary.

16:57 BST - The teams are out, the anthems have been sung. Kick-off is approaching.

16:50 BST - We're minutes away from Gareth Southgate bringing up a century of matches in charge for England.

Can he he continue adding to his tally?

16:40 BST - The scene in Dusseldorf is set.

15:55 BST - Here we go then. We have the teams for today's first quarter-final between England and Switzerland.

Ezri Konsa is England's only change from the team that beat Slovakia, replacing the suspended Marc Guehi in defence.

It presumably looks to be a back three, but all will be confirmed come kick-off.

15:30 BST - It's set to be Gareth Southgate's 100th match in charge of England and there have been rumblings he will twist and change his team's system, potentially shifting to a three-man defence.

The Three Lions have underwhelmed for the vast majority of the tournament so far and could use change to ignite a spark.

15:00 BST - Good afternoon and welcome back to our coverage of the Euro 2024 quarter-finals!

We've got the last two matches coming up today, starting with England taking on Switzerland at 17:00 BST in Dusseldorf.

21:01 BST - We are back underway in Hamburg...

20:25 BST - There was some talk before kick-off that this match could threaten to be a bit of a snooze-fest. While it's a tad early to judge, it's somewhat telling that both sides have accrued an xG rating of just 0.02 each.

It remains, Portugal 0-0 France.

20:00 BST - We have kick-off in Hamburg!

19:52 BST - Attention now turns to France and Portugal. It'll be billed by many as Kylian Mbappe versus Cristiano Ronaldo, but both sides have several stars they can rely on.

18:04 BST - Back underway for the second half. Who will make the first breakthrough?

17:47 BST - HALF-TIME: All square at the break with clear chances few and far between, but Spain ended the first period the stronger of the two. We have a good contest on our hands here.

17:30 BST - It's an open but scrappy start to this quarter-final in Stuttgart with both sides seeing names taken in referee Anthony Taylor's book.

Germany's physical approach has seen Antonio Rudiger, who will be suspended for the semi-final, booked with teammate David Raum, while Spain's Robin Le Normand will also be banned if they get there.

17:08 BST - Spain fans won't want to see this. Pedri is forced to be withdrawn just eight minutes in after failing to recover from a very robust challenge from Toni Kroos.
