It was one of - if not the most - lopsided matches of the season on Thursday, but Roma would not have minded as they managed to hold Bayer Leverkusen to reach the final of the Europa League.

It is the second successive European final for the Giallorossi under Jose Mourinho, who guided them to Europa Conference League glory last term in its maiden campaign.

In booking their ticket to Budapest in Hungary, Roma were made to fight to earn a goalless draw against a determined Leverkusen outfit trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Italy.

The Serie A side would have known about the dangers posed by Xabi Alonso's men as they sought to defend their slender lead.

And defend was what they were made to do for the vast majority of the second leg at the BayArena.

Roma appeared happy to let Leverkusen have ownership of the ball with the hosts keying 72 per cent possession and control of proceedings.

That possession did translate into plenty of chances for Leverkusen, who fired 23 shots at goal and forced goalkeeper Rui Patricio into making six saves.

In stark contrast, Roma mustered just one attempt courtesy of Lorenzo Pellegrini which was the first shot of the entire game after two minutes.

It was a huge difference, although it would not have bothered Roma given 15 of Leverkusen's attempts were from outside the box.

The low-danger bulk of Leverkusen's shots equated to them totalling 1.1 Expected Goals (xG) while Pellegrini's lone attempt for Roma was calculated at a meek 0.03, meaning the visitors statistically were fortunate to avoid a narrow defeat on the night.

Although Roma's front line was given extremely little to work with, their efforts on the defensive end should be praised on the flip side.

They put their bodies on the line against Leverkusen's waves of attacks making eight blocks, nine interceptions and a whopping 29 clearances to keep stifling their opponent.

But, as can sometimes happen in games involving Mourinho, the encounter did have some needle in terms of gamesmanship - slowing the match and running the clock down.

Three and eight minutes of additional time were added on at the end of both halves by referee Slavko Vincic with the bulk of that likely due to the ball being in play for just 54 minutes, as reported by The Athletic.

Roma's irritating style naturally got under the skin of everyone involved with Leverkusen including their usually calm boss Alonso, who was booked for dissent towards the end of the second half.

Left-back Mitchel Bakker let his emotions get the best of him and was booked for smashing the ball at the advertising hoardings, while teammates Moussa Diaby and Edmond Tapsoba also had their names taken.

Leverkusen goalkeeper and captain Lukas Hradecky later labelled Roma's antics "a disgrace" while midfielder Kerem Demirbay felt the Italians were undeservedly "rewarded" for their "ugly" method of play.

In response and in typical Mourinho style, the Portuguese beamed and only stoked the fire by hailing the occasion as an "epic game with a great referee". Vintage.

Crucially, however, the most important statistic is the scoreline which is what Roma and Mourinho will be looking at more than anything.

For Leverkusen and Alonso, who is still so early in his managerial career, it is a frustrating learning curve that should go a long way towards benefitting his growth going forward.
