Former Real Madrid and Man Utd defender Varane retires aged 31
The four-time Champions League winner had recently departed Manchester to sign for Serie A club Como but has now confirmed his retirement from football.
Varane announced his decision on social media on Wednesday morning following rumours that he was set to call time on his career.
"They say all good things must come to an end," he said.
"In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime.
"Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love."
Varane joined Real Madrid in 2011 and would spend a decade with the Spanish giants, making a name for himself as one of the best defenders in world football.
The Frenchman won three La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, four Club World Cups, three Super Cups and a Copa del Rey before eventually leaving for Manchester United in 2021.
Despite having suffered several injuries in England, Varane won an EFL Cup and an FA Cup before leaving on a free transfer in the summer of 2024 to join Como in Italy.
He only featured once in the Coppa Italia before picking up a knee injury and announcing his retirement from football; confirming he will remain with Como in an off-the-pitch role.
Varane was also a regular for the French national team, winning the World Cup in 2018.
