Fantasy Premier League: Time for redemption after failed wildcards

FPL Gameweek 7 top picks
FPL Gameweek 7 top picksFlashscore
Most of the players who opted for a wildcard before the previous round may feel disappointed. Players such as Gabriel, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Erling Haaland did not score any major points, yet they were selected by plenty of players. Who can we think of for the next round?

Congratulations to all Cole Palmer (10.7) keepers who may complain that the Englishman didn't contribute a fifth or sixth goal in the match against Brighton, but after all, we all wish we had such problems in Fantasy Premier League! Now Chelsea will play Nottingham Forest and I'm curious to see how many decide to give him the captain's armband. Erling Haaland (15.3) will play at the Etihad Stadium against Fulham and choosing to captain him certainly looks extremely tempting too.

Who to buy?

Leandro Trossard (6.9) - A heavy hipster selection, but if you like to visit such areas of the game, this looks very encouraging. While Martin Odegaard is injured, the Belgian should have solid minutes spent on the pitch. He scored a goal in the last game against Leicester and will almost certainly play against a weak Southampton at the weekend. I don't know if he's a long-term pick, but he could earn a lot of points this Saturday, and very few players have him.

Josko Gvardiol (5.9) - We've waited a long time for the Croatian to hit big again, who was bringing us points by the truckload at the end of last season. Now he has finally unlocked himself and scored a very nice goal against Newcastle, with a few easier games in the Premier League ahead for Manchester City. Of course, with Pep Guardiola, everyone is at risk of being rested, but Gvardiol has a fairly assured squad, big offensive aspirations, plus an easy schedule and chances of a clean sheet. If you're looking to sell any of your premium defenders, I'd recommend switching to Gvardiol.

Brennan Johnson (6.4) - The Welshman is also a heavily outside-the-box proposition, but after all, I'm not going to recommend you buy Bukayo Saka (10.1) or Mohamed Salah (12.7), who every other player has already. Johnson is quietly gaining points and consolidating his position in Tottenham's starting 11, which has started to score a lot of goals. The Welshman himself often goes down to the bench before the end of the game, but at least at Old Trafford it didn't stop him scoring a goal and picking up an assist. And yet, it's now time for the game against Brighton, who let themselves get hammered by four goals against Chelsea.

Tips from Flashscore

Phil Foden (9.2) - A brave choice given that he has not once been in Manchester City's starting line-up in the Premier League this season. However, in the Champions League match against Slovan Bratislava he was the best player on the pitch and if he gets a chance in the league too, the games against Fulham and Wolves could be ideal for him. If you're thinking of buying him, you could also always wait until Saturday's leaked Citizens squad to make sure Foden will be in it.

Leif Davis (4.5) - at 4.5m this is a great choice, looking at the creativity and ability of the defender. Last round against Aston Villa he created seven chances, including three big ones. Ipswich have a fairly favourable fixture this weekend and Davis could be an effective addition to your team for little money.

Matheus Cunha (6.5) - Wolves have not had a successful start to the season so far, but they face a much more pleasant schedule in the coming weeks. Cunha scored twelve goals last season and proved he has the quality for Premier League level. Furthermore, he is the only striker to take corner kicks in the entire league, so he can also add a few assists that way.
