Sunday, August 18th

18:45 BST - Erling Haaland often isn't too involved with play but today he took that to another level, becoming the first player to complete just THREE passes while playing 90 minutes under Pep Guardiola.

We'll be sure his coach won't mind given his record of 91 goals in 100 games...

18:27 BST - FULL-TIME! City begin their chase for a fifth Premier League title with a 2-0 win against Chelsea, who showed some glimpses of positivity under the new tutelage of Enzo Maresca.

18:16 BST - GOAL! Former Chelsea player Mateo Kovacic drives brilliantly at the defence and nets from the edge of the box to increase City's lead to 2-0.

City have not been totally fluid, but that could seal the points.

17:57 BST - NO GOAL! City have a goal of their own chalked off as Erling Haaland commits a foul in the lead-up to Rico Lewis converting.

17:50 BST - Pedro Neto is on for his Chelsea debut after his big-money move from Wolves. Can he make an impact on proceedings?

17:37 BST - Back underway for the second half with Chelsea seeking an equaliser.

City make one change and the bright Savinho is replaced by Phil Foden after picking up a knock in the first half.

17:23 BST - Haaland's deft finish has City ahead at the break. Chelsea have had their moments in and around the box but there's been a lack of cutting-edge from them so far.

Half-time stats

17:15 BST - NO GOAL! Chelsea think they've equalised through Nicolas Jackson after Ederson spills a shot, but the forward strays just offside.

17:03 BST - NO PENALTY! Chelsea appeal for a spot kick after Enzo Fernandez goes down under contact from Savinho but referee Anthony Taylor deems no foul.

17:01 BST - An intricate move as you'd expect from City to feed in Haaland.

16:48 BST - GOAL! Erling Haaland finds space in the box and holds off two defenders before clipping an effort into the net to give City the lead.

That's the Norwegian's 91st goal for the club in his 100th game.

16:30 BST - City get the game underway at a sunny Stamford Bridge.

16:25 BST - Counting down to kick-off now. Enzo Maresca worked under Pep Guardiola during his time at City - can he do a number on his former employers?

15:22 BST - NO GOAL! Substitute Odsonne Edouard thinks he's put Palace in front but is adjudged to be just offside.

Palace are beginning to turn the screw now.

15:17 BST - GOAL! Palace are rewarded for their hard work with an equaliser as Daniel Munoz's back post header is redirected by the unfortunate Ethan Pinnock, who puts it into his own net. 1-1.

15:06 BST - We're back underway for the second half.

14:50 BST - What started as a slow burner ended with action at both ends, but it's Mbeumo's strike that is the difference at the break.

14:31 BST - GOAL! Brentford take the lead through Bryan Mbeumo, who cuts inside and fires a shot into the far corner. You could argue that was slightly against the run of play.

14:28 BST - NO GOAL! Eberechi Eze scores a stunning free-kick but the referee blows for a foul in the box before the ball hits the back of the net. Bizarre one...

14:20 BST - Nothing much to shout about with 20 minutes gone...

13:25 BST - A little more on Toney's absence for Brentford with Thomas Frank confirming the England striker has been left out amid ongoing transfer speculation.

The Bees boss told Sky Sports: "A lot of things going on with Ivan (Toney), especially with transfers, there's a lot of transfer interest.

"Because of all that, we've decided not to include him in the squad."

13:00 BST - The teams are in ahead of this afternoon's all-London clash between Brentford and Crystal Palace.

Ivan Toney is not in the Bees' squad, while Marc Guehi and Jean-Philippe Mateta are starters for the visitors.

11:11 BST - Just two seasons ago, Ipswich Town were engaged in their fourth consecutive League one campaign, but following back-to-back promotions, they’re ready to rub shoulders with the stars of the Premier League for the first time in 22 years!

Ipswich have been busy during the off-season in many ways, upgrading Portman Road to Premier League standard, whilst on the pitch they’ve managed to persuade highly touted manager Kieran McKenna to stay and spent over £50m to improve their squad.

The Tractor Boys will be delighted to begin their campaign in front of their home crowd, who have had plenty to celebrate in recent times after seeing their side lose just one of their last 39 home league matches (W28, D10). They also have a habit of avoiding defeat in their season opener, as you’d have to go back 11 seasons to find the last time Ipswich lost on the opening day of a league campaign (W6, D4).

Speaking of new beginnings, Premier League juggernauts Liverpool will arrive at Portman Road to commence the era of new manager Arne Slot, who was handed the reins after Jürgen Klopp’s nine-year tenure at the club came to an end.

Klopp left the club having failed to secure a top-four finish just once in his eight full seasons in charge, while also guiding Liverpool to their first league title in three decades, meaning there are almightily big shoes for the Dutchman fill.

09:00 BST - Mikel Arteta has turned his Arsenal side into a team of battle-hardened soldiers that have been Manchester City's closest title rivals for the past two seasons.

Will it be third time lucky for Arteta and Arsenal?

23:10 BST - That about wraps things up for us tonight. Join us again tomorrow as the first round of Premier League fixtures resumes, starting with Ipswich v Liverpool at 12:30 BST. Goodnight!

22:45 BST - Speaking after his side's slender 1-0 win over Fulham, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was quick to praise match-winner Joshua Zirkzee.

“He has great qualities to make that link-up play," he told Sky Sports of the forward. "We have some great midfielders around him, who we can make combinations so we can take control of the game."

Ten Hag added: “Scoring for strikers is important.

“And he should be there where he was, to finish, to kill, but he has more qualities so he has to get the right balance. We have to work with him – I think that is one of the things I spoke with him about. He has to arrive in the box to get his finishes."

21:53 BST - FULL-TIME: Manchester United 1-0 Fulham. A great advert for the Red Devils' new recruits, despite an impressive defensive display from the Cottagers.

Both Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui made a good impression in the hard-fought win.

21:45 BST - GOAL! Joshua Zirkzee gets his first for Man Utd, and what a time to do it! 1-0.

21:37 BST - With a little over ten minutes to go, it's Man Utd who look the more threatening. But Fulham's Leno has stood firm so far. Still 0-0.

21:20 BST - Mount is replaced by Joshua Zirkzee, who makes his Manchester United debut.

21:18 BST - Chance! Mason Mount probably should have just scored the first goal of the Premier League season, but his effort is thrwarted. 0-0.

21:02 BST - SECOND HALF: We are back underway at Old Trafford, where it remains 0-0.

20:47 BST - HALF-TIME: Manchester United 0-0 Fulham. Well, we'd be lying if we said the first 45 minutes of the 2024/25 Premier League season was anything but dull.

Three bookings the only action of note. Maybe the second period will offer a little more.

20:30 BST - Man United have gone up a gear in the last five minutes, with Bruno Fernandes almost breaking the deadlock. Solid save by Berndt Leno. 0-0.

20:25 BST - Not a great deal to report from Old Trafford thus far. Fulham have looked the more threatening of the two sides, but that's mainly because Man Utd are yet to have a sniff at goal. 0-0.

20:09 BST - Noussair Mazraoui is the only one of the four to start tonight, but Manchester United certainly have made some shrewd signings this summer...
