Manchester United appoint Portuguese coach Amorim as new manager
The Portuguese coach arrives to replace Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday, October 29th - but will officially start work on Monday, November 11th with Ruud van Nistelrooy continuing his duties as interim manager until then.
Sporting have also confirmed that United will pay an €11 million (£9.2m) release clause for his services.
Amorim enjoyed a highly successful spell in Portugal where he won two league titles, including their first in 19 years, losing just one game in his first full season.
Sporting also claimed two consecutive Portuguese League Cups under his guidance while Amorim himself won three in a row, having also triumphed in the competition with Braga before heading to Lisbon.
"Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements," the club stated.
"He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.
"Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.
"Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins."
The former midfielder also enjoyed a successful playing career with Benfica and the aforementioned Braga.
Amorim joins United with the club languishing in 14th place in the Premier League after a poor start to the campaign - his first game in charge will be against Ipswich on Sunday, November 24th.
