Manchester United manager Ten Hag sacked after one win in eight games
The Dutchman had spent just over two years in Manchester and won both the Carabao and FA Cups but failed to make them a real force in the Premier League - with United sat 14th at the time of his sacking.
In an official statement, United confirmed Ten Hag's exit and that Ruud van Nistelrooy will take interim charge of the team alongside the current coaching staff until a permanent successor is appointed.
"Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager," the club said.
"Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
"Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."
Manchester United recently fell to a last-minute 2-1 defeat away at West Ham and are still without a win in the Europa League having drawn all three fixtures so far.
The Dutchman's job was the subject of speculation for most of last season as United recorded their worst Premier League finish in eighth, and with British billionaire and INEOS chairman Jim Ratcliffe taking charge of football operations.
A surprise FA Cup final win over Manchester City, however, plus the fact Ten Hag was able to blame numerous injuries for their poor form earned the manager another chance.
He signed a new contract to extend his stay until 2026 but was let go less than a year later.
In his first season, Ten Hag secured a third-place finish and won the Carabao Cup, winning the club's first trophy since 2017.
