Martial's seven lives after disappointing Sevilla loan spell

Anthony Martial returned from injury a few days ago and played a key role in helping Manchester United to a 2-0 win over Everton in the Premier League.

The French striker is among the best sales for Monaco - specialists in selling players. United paid around 60 million euros (£53m) for a player who was not even in his twenties at the time and who had barely performed at the highest level for one season, 2014/15, in which he scored 13 goals. His good work helped him to leave French football for the first time, land in the Premier League and, of course, significantly improve his contract.

This is Martial's eighth season at Old Trafford, although it would be more accurate to say it has been seven-and-a-half so far. Expectations were very high when his signing was confirmed, in any case, influenced by the high cost and there is no doubt that they have not been met. He has scored 60 goals in regular competition, 13 in cup competitions and another 13 in the Champions League and Europa League. He is not far short of a hundred - a figure he has reached if his other experiences are taken into account.

Many physical problems, especially since 2021, have weighed Martial down throughout his career, which still has a long way to go. He was at his best in the 2019/20 season scoring 23 goals - a remarkable tally that he was far from being able to build on. Since then, he has been losing impact in the squad and even had to leave on loan in January 2022, heading to Sevilla, who he will face on April 13th, to try to recover his sensations.

An unsuccessful exit

He did not fare well in La Liga, where he was not even able to make his debut. The Nervión side were hoping to squeeze a player with a certain star status, but the attempt at a resurrection came to nothing. He made a single appearance against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League and did not stand out from the rest. A few days before that, he assisted Rafa Mir in a 2-0 win over Elche. It is worth noting that he missed eight games through injury - another fact that sums up the loan spell as a failure.

The situation has changed since he returned to Manchester, although he still hasn't had the desired continuity. He was out of action from the beginning of February until mid-March and has already missed as many games. However, his appearances have been key to United's important wins, such as that on Saturday and he has found the net seven times in 17 appearances since August. Only Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes have bettered that tally.
