Spurs leave it late to secure comeback win over Sheffield Utd
After racking up five goals in a commanding victory over Burnley prior to the international break, a confident Tottenham side made a dominant start to the encounter, launching an early onslaught on the Sheffield United goal.
Fortunately for the visitors, an inspired Wes Foderingham was on hand to deny Pape Matar Sarr on two occasions, before thwarting Yves Bissouma and Spurs captain Son Heung-min in the opening 20 minutes.
After scraping through the first quarter of the game, the Blades sent their own warning shot when Manchester City loanee James McAtee forced Guglielmo Vicario into a smart reaction save after latching onto Jayden Bogle’s inviting cutback.
Tottenham quickly re-established control of the contest, but they could still find no way past Foderingham, who made a total of seven saves in the first period.
Following the HT words of Postecoglou, the hosts picked up where they left off in the first half, as they continued to surge forward in search of an opening goal.
Summer signing Manor Solomon threatened on the hour mark, drifting in from the left flank before fizzing an effort wide. Just moments later, the Israel international fired another strike over the crossbar, adding to the home side’s growing frustration.
Sensationally, it was the Blades who broke the deadlock in the 74th minute when a long throw from the right flank broke to Gustavo Hamer, who slammed the ball into the bottom corner to send the travelling support into raptures.
Hamer’s second goal of the season persuaded Postecoglou to make a triple change, which included a debut for Wales international Brennan Johnson.
The summer addition thought he had marked his first Spurs appearance with a late equaliser, but his effort was quickly chalked off for an offside infringement.
With 12 minutes added on, Spurs made full use of the extra time.
First, Richarlison headed home Ivan Perišić’s corner to set up a grandstand finish and, with Sheffield United on the ropes, Spurs duly took advantage as Kulusevski fired past a helpless Foderingham to spark scenes of delirium in North London.
Sheffield United’s afternoon took another turn for the worse when Oli McBurnie was shown a second yellow card for dissent, and the result means the Blades remain without a win this campaign.
Tottenham, meanwhile, move up to second with the three points as they enjoy something of a revival under Postecoglou.
