Lazio striker Ciro Immobile was the victim of a car accident this morning in Rome. He suffered a distortion of the spinal column and a compound fracture of the 11th right rib.

The Italian collided with tram number 19 in his SUV this morning in Rome, on Ponte Matteotti, a short distance from the Stadio Olimpico.

The front of his Land Rover Defender was destroyed. 'The tram ran a red light. Luckily, I'm fine, just my arm hurts a little,' said Immobile, who, together with the seven people involved in the accident, was taken to the Gemelli hospital for checks.

According to the first reconstruction by the police, however, it may have been the Lazio striker who misinterpreted the traffic lights and collided with the public transport vehicle at high speed.

In the impact, Immobile's car was destroyed; the airbags exploded and the windows shattered.

Also damaged was the driver's cab of the tram, which went off the tracks and tilted. At the time of the accident, the tram was loaded with passengers; six of them, in addition to the driver, were taken to hospital.

Among those taken for medical attention were the striker's two daughters, Michela and Giorgia, whom Immobile was accompanying to a dance recital. A neck brace was applied to one of the two girls.

The examinations revealed a spinal cord injury and a compound fracture of a rib for the Lazio captain.

The following is a statement from the Serie A club:

'The medical staff of S.S. Lazio announce that, today, following a car accident, the player Ciro Immobile suffered a spinal cord sprain and a compound fracture of the right XI rib.

'His condition is currently good. The player remains under observation in the emergency medicine ward directed by Professor Francesco Franceschi of the Agostino Gemelli IRCCS University Polyclinic in Rome.'
