Lionel Messi (35) has confirmed the upcoming World Cup in Qatar will be the last of his career.

The news was announced on Thursday, with the Argentina and Paris Saint-Germain star admitting he is feeling anxious about the countdown to the tournament.

"This will be my last World Cup — for sure. The decision has been made," Messi told Argentine journalist Sebastian Vignolo

"I’m counting down the days until the World Cup. The truth is, there’s a little anxiety, saying, 'Well, we’re here, what’s going to happen? It’s my last one, how’s it going to go?'

"On one hand, I can’t wait for it to arrive but I’m also desperate for it to go well."

The Qatar edition of the World Cup is set to be the fifth that Messi will play in, having scored six goals across the last four tournaments.

He has never won international football’s biggest tournament and came closest in 2014 when Argentina were beaten by Germany after extra-time in Brazil.

Although he boasts a haul of trophies at club level across his career, it took him until 2021 to lift his first major trophy with his country which came in the form of the Copa America.

Argentina open their World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on November 22nd before rounding out Group C against Mexico and Poland.
