Lionel Messi's selection of celebratory photos following Argentina's World Cup victory last Sunday surpassed 57 million likes in just over two days, becoming the most liked post in Instagram history.

The Argentina forward posted 10 photos of himself and his teammates celebrating after their historic win, beating France on penalties after an incredible World Cup final.

He overtook a photo of an egg to claim the record, as well as a picture from rival Cristiano Ronaldo of the two legends playing chess together.

Messi scored twice against France, either side of an Angel Di Maria goal, on his way to claiming the one trophy that had eluded him for so long.

His performances across the competition earned him his second World Cup golden ball - essentially the 'player of the tournament' award - as football fans rejoiced around the world.

The worldwide love for Messi is clear to see through his social media with nearly 60 million people liking his celebration post in just two days.
