Michael 'Bully Boy' Smith was on the verge of elimination from the PDC Darts World Championships at the hands of Martin Schindler, but completed a superb comeback to advance to the round of 16.

The world number four was 3-1 down going into a potential game-winning set for Schindler, but won the final three sets to ensure he avoided an early exit.

An early 170 checkout - only the second of the entire tournament - was the highlight of a tense encounter between the two players.

The comeback victory means Smith will face Joe Cullen in the round of 16, who defeated Australian player Damon Heta earlier in the night.

Michael van Gerwen also advanced to the next stage of the competition after a comfortable 4-2 win against Mensur Suljovic.

The Dutchman could have had things wrapped up earlier if it wasn't for an incredible 161 checkout from Suljovic.
