Spanish motorbike racer Joan Mir has extended his deal with Honda to continue racing the elite-level MotoGP circuit until 2026, the Japanese team said Friday.

A 2020 world champion with Suzuki, Mir has been with Honda since 2023 but has failed so far to shine for the team.

"I know what I need and I know what Honda can achieve, so I hope we can get there together. We will continue to work hard for the future and for the rest of the season," said the 26-year-old from Mallorca, currently 18th in the world championship standings.

Honda director Koji Watanabe admitted it had been a difficult season for Honda.

"Even under these circumstances, Mir has put his faith in the team and we are very grateful for his attitude, he never gives up and always fights," said Watanabe.

Mir will again ride alongside Luca Marini in 2025 within the official Honda team, with the Italian already signed up on a two-year deal.
