He hasn't lifted the title since his victory back in 2019 when he defeated Michael Smith 7-3 at Alexandra Palace.
Van Gerwen's form has dipped in the following years, but the 33-year-old is seemingly getting back to his best and has rediscovered some of the lethal touches that had previously made him such a feared competitor.
Pundits and fellow players alike are unanimous in naming the Dutchman as the favourite for the championships, which begin on December 15th.
After winning this year's Premier League, World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and Players Championship Finals, number three-ranked Van Gerwen is adamant that he's finally ready to take home his fourth world title.
"I don't have to prove that I am better than anyone, because they know if I play my A-game, I am the best," said Van Gerwen.
"If you look to my games against Gerwyn and Peter, if you look at the stats – they don't lie.
"I have a big target on my back, but I can handle it. I've been under pressure so many times, and most of the time, I've survived."
Van Gerwen will face fellow Dutchman Niels Zonneveld or Lewy Williams in his second-round tie on December 21.
