Premier League Team of the Week: Mahrez and Maddison star
Despite this, the end of another weekend of Premier League action means it is time for Flashscore's Premier League Team of the Week!
GK - David de Gea (Manchester United)
One of three Manchester United players to feature this week, De Gea made six saves and kept a clean sheet as the Red Devils eventually defeated Leeds United 2-0.
While a 2-0 scoreline suggests a comfortable game for Erik ten Hag's side, De Gea was called upon on more than one occasion to keep Leeds at bay in his 400th Premier League appearance.
Another clean sheet means the Spaniard has equalled Peter Schmeichel's all-time United record of 178.
DEF - Joe Gomez (Liverpool)
Liverpool got a much-needed win against Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday evening, winning 2-0 in relatively comfortable fashion.
A big contributor to their victory was Joe Gomez, who dominated the visiting attack and didn't allow Everton to get going at all.
Despite only being 25, Gomez showed his experience against young Ellis Simms who really struggled in the lone striker role.
DEF - Luke Shaw (Manchester United)
Another week, another inclusion for Luke Shaw. The fullback was put in the centre of defence and played his part in keeping a clean sheet in Manchester United's win against Leeds - before moving back out wide in the second half and providing an assist for Marcus Rashford's opener.
His performances since returning from the World Cup have established him as one of the best left backs in the Premier League.
DEF - Pervis Estupinan (Brighton)
Another left back who has been excellent this season is Brighton's Pervis Estupinan. The Ecuadorian was excellent for the Seagulls in their 1-1 draw against rivals Crystal Palace, providing an assist and having a goal wrongly ruled out by VAR.
Had the officials given the correct decision, it would have been another huge win for the south coast side - a review after the game confirmed VAR John Brooks drew the offside lines from the wrong Palace defender, thus incorrectly ruling out Estupinan's strike.
MID - Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City)
Riyad Mahrez continued his excellent form in 2023 with another goal and an assist in Manchester City's 3-1 win against Aston Villa.
The Algerian has contributed to 11 goals in all competitions since the end of the World Cup, more than any other City player.
MID - James Maddison (Leicester City)
Leicester City provided the upset of the weekend on Saturday, thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 at the King Power Stadium.
As has been the case so often this season, the majority of the Foxes' good play came through James Maddison. The Englishman registered a goal and an assist in what felt like a significant result for Leicester in their bid to pull away from the relegation battle.
MID - Fred (Manchester United)
The third and final United player to make the Team of the Week, Fred put in a brilliant man of the match showing against Leeds on Sunday.
He did the defensive work in the absence of fellow Brazilian Casemiro and came out on top against a strong opposing midfield featuring Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie.
Fred completed 10 tackles, the joint most by a United player in the Premier League over the last six seasons.
MID - Willian (Fulham)
The Brazilian has been an inspired signing for Fulham, with not many expecting his arrival to have turned out as well as it has.
Willian got on the scoresheet again at the weekend, netting the first goal in Fulham's 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest.
As well as contributing a superb goal, the winger was a threat throughout the game and gave the Forest defenders a much harder time than they would have liked.
FWD - Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)
All of Liverpool's front three performed well against Everton, but Mohamed Salah just edges a place in our Team of the Week ahead of Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.
The Egyptian opened the scoring by finishing off a superb Reds counter attack, while providing a constant threat down the right-hand side as fans started to see Salah back on form again.
FWD - Ivan Toney (Brentford)
Despite the controversy surrounding his goal (the fact it would have been rightfully disallowed if the VAR had actually drawn the offside lines when reviewing it), Ivan Toney performed well for Brentford in their 1-1 draw against Arsenal.
The striker bullied Gabriel and William Saliba, giving the Bees a constant outlet when they needed it as they went unbeaten for the tenth consecutive game.
He also scored the equaliser, even if it shouldn't have stood.
FWD - Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City)
Just like Maddison, Kelechi Iheanacho was crucial to Leicester's 4-1 win against Spurs.
The Nigerian forward also provided a goal and set one up himself - and was only denied a second assist by the finest of margins when Harvey Barnes was judged to have strayed offside in the second half.
