England open their World Cup campaign against Iran on 21 November, but when does Gareth Southgate announce his final squad and who keep their place following a disastrous Nations League campaign?

The Three Lions drew 3-3 with Germany in their final Nations League match and have been relegated from Group C.

Pressure is mounting on Gareth Southgate to deliver in Qatar with just 54 days to go until the start of the World Cup.

But before the England squad fly out to the Middle East, there are some key dates for the diary:

When will the England World Cup squad be announced?

Southgate is expected to name his provisional England squad on Friday, October 21st.

Eligible players will have just under one month of Premier League action to stake their claim to be included in the squad, although as seen before, the manager likes to maintain a level of loyalty to his players.

One such player, Harry Maguire, was included in the starting XI to face Italy and Germany despite only featuring five times for Manchester United this season.

His rusty form showed when he gave away a cheap penalty for the opening goal of the match.

At the Qatar World Cup, managers are allowed to pick a 26-man squad, an upgrade on the traditional 23-man selection from previous tournaments.

Which England players are likely to be involved?

Southgate maintains his loyalty to players who have served England well during his tenure and for that reason many of the current selection will likely be involved in Qatar.

It's expected that, upon their returns from injury, Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson will be involved again, but doubts remain over the inclusion of Kalvin Phillips due to a shoulder injury.

The likes of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Declan Rice and Phil Foden will almost certainly be included.

However there are questions over fringe players in the squad, with two already needing to be cut from the current side to make a 26-man squad.

Jarrod Bowen has had a slow start to the domestic season with West Ham, while the likes of Conor Coady and Marc Guehi aren't guaranteed places in defence.

James Maddison is a player many fans want to be included, despite Southgate refusing to select him thus far.

Add on to that players like Ryan Sessegnon who has performed well at left wing-back for Tottenham Hotspur this season, and the manager is facing some key selection issues.

Who will England play next?

England have yet to announce any pre-tournament friendlies meaning their next fixture will be at the Qatar World Cup against Iran on Monday, November 21st, at the Khalifa International Stadium (kick-off 13:00 GMT)

England will then face the United States as their second fixture in Group B on Friday, November 25th, at the Al Bayt Stadium (kick-off 19:00 GMT), and finish their group against Wales on Tuesday, November 29th (kick-off 19:00 GMT).

Should England win their group, they will face the runner-up of Group A in the Last 16 on Sunday, December 4th, but will be drawn against the winner of Group A on Saturday December 3rd should they finish runner-up.

Group A includes Netherlands, Senegal, Ecuador or the hosts Qatar.
