Tom Curry has been handed a three game ban after being sent-off in the third minute of England’s opening Rugby World Cup match against Argentina on Saturday.

The 25-year-old flanker was initially shown a yellow card for a head-on-head tackle with Argentina's Juan Cruz Mallia, but the offence was later upgraded to red following a bunker review.

Curry attended an Independent Disciplinary Committee hearing on Tuesday and is set to miss England's next two Pool D matches against Japan and Chile.

The Sale back row could miss their final pool match against Samoa on October 7th if he fails to complete a World Rugby coaching programme on tackling.

The Committee noted the offence usually carries a minimum six-game ban, but said: "having considered the mitigating factors, including admission of foul play and correctness of the red card at the first opportunity, an exemplary disciplinary record, apology to the player and good character, reduced the sanction by the maximum mitigation of 50 per cent."

Curry's red card shone a spotlight on England's poor disciplinary record with three players sent off in their last four games.

England captain Owen Farrell will miss their next match against Japan following his red card against Wales in August, but number eight Billy Vunipola will return to action after seeing out his suspension from their recent match against Ireland.

Steve Borthwick's side beat Argentina 27-10 in their opening World Cup match and are now favourites to top Pool D, potantially earning a favourable draw for the quarter-finals.
