Tetteh turns around Hull fortunes in win over West Brom
Fueled by winger Jed Wallace’s lightning pace, West Brom were all over Hull in the opening minutes in a bid to undo their recent adversities on the road. However, despite Marc Albrighton and Daryl Dike’s successive efforts, the hosts had Karl Darlow to thank for executing a flurry of top class saves, without which Hull could easily have been playing catch-up.
As the hosts tried to re-group, they managed to take the lead as Benjamin Tetteh scored against the run of play thanks to Liam Rosenior’s intention to reorganise his side’s formation. Capitalising on the break, the Ghana international played a one-two with Regan Slater and struck a powerful shot into the far corner past Joshua Griffiths to make it 1-0. The Baggies were left shocked, leaving everything to play for following the break.
However, the Tigers quickly doubled their lead after carrying their momentum into the second period, pressuring the visitors from a corner kick. Sean McLoughlin rose high to meet the delivery, which unfortunately nicked off defender Dara O’Shea into the back of his own net, inflicting a heavy blow to West Brom’s comeback plan. Luck wasn’t meant to be on the visitors’ side, as minutes later, playmaker John Swift rattled the post with a thunderous freekick, before Wallace forced Darlow into a point-blank save.
Carlos Corberán’s outfit looked like a shadow of their past self despite seeing more of the ball, as Hull effectively neutralised them with every passing move. Having fluffed their chances in front of goal, a fourth successive away defeat sees West Brom’s promotion push experience yet another setback. In stark contrast, the Tigers’ first H2H win since November 2018 also marks a seventh successive unbeaten home match this term.
