Trusty fires Birmingham to victory over QPR
QPR were undoubtedly the form team coming into the game, with their impressive performances of late helping them to compete at the top of the table as we approach the break for the FIFA World Cup. That said though, Birmingham have also been performing admirably in spite of their off-field issues, and it was John Eustace’s side who went ahead after just four minutes. Krystian Bielik played the ball back into the area to Auston Trusty, who stuck a leg out to meet the bouncing ball before seeing it loop over Seny Dieng and into the top left corner for one of the most audacious goals you will see this season.
The visitors were keen to hit back as soon as possible, and Birmingham goalkeeper John Ruddy had to be alert to tip Ilias Chair’s free-kick over the crossbar. Beale’s side looked rather off the pace in the first half, and they were made to pay for a second time when Emmanuel Longelo was freed on the left side and advanced to the edge of the area before cutting in on his right foot and finding the bottom-right corner with his curling effort to give the hosts a 2-0 half-time lead.
Beale attempted to change his side’s fortunes at the break, bringing on Luke Amos for Johansen, however it was an unwanted similar story for QPR as they struggled to break down a disciplined and committed Blues' defence, which is statistically the best in the league so far this season. The visitors were given a potential lifeline with just over 10 minutes remaining when they were awarded a penalty, but their night was summed up when Lyndon Dykes was denied by Ruddy.
This victory extends Birmingham's unbeaten run at home to four matches, and lifts them to 11th. QPR, meanwhile, remain second following this missed opportunity.
