Michael Van Gerwen began his PDC World Darts Championship campaign with a dominant second-round performance to beat Lewy Williams.

Van Gerwen - who has won the event on three occasions - dropped just one leg to the 20-year-old in the 3-0 win as he laid down a marker for his title rivals.

The Dutchman averaged 101.84 at Alexandra Palace and will next face either Mensur Suljovic or Mike de Decker.

Meanwhile, England’s Stephen Bunting recovered from a set down to triumph 3-1 over Leonard Gates to book a third-round date against Dave Chisnall, who overcame Andrew Gilding in the afternoon session.

Mervyn King also secured his place in the next round but was forced to take the long route against a spirited Danny Baggish.

The 56-year-old appeared to be easing through but was pegged back by his American opponent before triumphing in the decisive fifth leg of the match.
