Michael van Gerwen will take on Michael Smith on Tuesday evening in the final of the PDC Darts World Championships, a repeat of the 2019 final.

Van Gerwen is chasing a fourth world title and goes into the tie as favourite having not dropped a set in either the quarter-final or semi-final matches.

In fact, the Dutchman has only dropped three sets throughout the whole tournament.

He started his pursuit of the world title against Lewis Williams, comfortably coming out on top with a 3-0 win.

That lead to an encounter with Mensur Suljovic who gave van Gerwen his toughest test of the competition.

Despite a valiant effort, Suljovic ended up losing 4-2.

The Dutchman would then beat world number 14 Dirk van Duijvenbode 4-1, before dominating in his quarter and semi-final ties against Chris Dobey and Dimitri Van den Bergh.

Dobey was brushed aside with a 5-0 victory while Van den Bergh also failed to win a single set and was beaten 6-0.

'Bully Boy' Smith made it all the way to the final last year but was defeated 7-5 by Peter Wright.

The Englishman had a hardrer ride on route to the final - but has overcome ever challenge put to him so far.

An opening round 3-0 win against Nathan Rafferty was followed by a narrow 4-3 win over Martin Schindler.

It looked like Smith was eliminated when his opponent came within one leg of advancing during the fifth set, but a superb comeback saw the world number four sneak through to the round of 16.

Fellow Englishmen Joe Cullen and Stephen Bunting stood in his way next, with Smith beating them 4-1 and 5-3 respectively to make the semi-finals.

He came out on top against Gabriel Clemens, winning 6-2 to reach the final on Tuesday night.

One of van Gerwen or Smith will be named world champion and thus take the world number one spot.
