The Sierra Leone captain has reunited with Wigan manager Kolo Toure, who he played alongside at Liverpool during his brief loan spell on Merseyside.

The 31-year-old was a free agent after his contract with Fatih Karagumruk came to an end earlier this month.

Caulker had spent five years playing in Turkey, with mixed spells at Alanyaspor, Fenerbahce and Gaziantep prior to his most recent club.

It marks a return to English football for the one-time England player, who switched allegiances to Sierra Leone after winning his Three Lions cap in 2012.

The Tottenham youth academy product is now at his 14th club and said he was looking forward to a new challenge with Wigan.

"Five years 106 days after my last game in the Championship, I am back," he wrote on social media.

"I've spent days, weeks, months, and years dreaming that one day I will return.

"I know it’s going to be a huge challenge given our current league position, but it's a challenge that I am looking forward to.

"After making the decision to come back from Turkey a couple of weeks ago, the gaffer reached out to me.

"He is an ex-teammate of mine many years ago, and he spoke about the opportunity and the project he's got going here."

Wigan are currently rooted to the bottom of the Championship, with just six wins and six draws in 26 league games.
